Still Making History
Island Point marks a significant transition in the history of Saco Island, whose first development dates back to the 1700s when colonial settlers populated the area.
The first Revolution to transform this area was the American, the second the Industrial. In the early 1800s, it became home to iron and textile manufacturing, connected to the mainland by tunnels and bridges. After these industries moved south or offshore, the remaining structures became home to a variety of machine shops, a major shoe manufacturer, and other small businesses.
The development of Island Point represents a singular vision for the Saco area. Few places in Maine encompass all that this region has: a historic and vibrant downtown, sandy beaches, excellent schools, a national wildlife refuge, a university, easy access to major transportation hubs, proximity to New England’s largest cities, and, of course, the Saco River itself. All free of the congestion and rush of most modern living.
Island Point is a flourishing community that blends perfectly into its neighboring environs… a natural connection between the past and future… and a symbol of the region’s emergence as one of New England’s most desirable and livable locations.
